What is training as a media technologist all about?

Training as a media technologist entails a great deal of versatility. In addition to creativity and accuracy, you should be particularly enthusiastic about technology, because in many digital print shops, technical progress is at the heart of everything that happens. For example, the print image is transferred from a PC to the respective press via fully automated or also manual processes. You are thus responsible for monitoring the printing processes. You also have the option of choosing between different training courses in the field of printing technology.

As a media technologist for printing, you are – as the name suggests – responsible for printing. You control and monitor the printing of various printed products, which are used to produce a book or a calendar, for example.

In your training as a media technologist for print processing, your tasks include the
Production of print products from digital printing. The inspection of the printed sheets as well as the
Machine setup of the respective processing machines is your responsibility.

What tasks do I perform as a digital printing media technologist?

You are responsible for the digital machinery:

  • Besides the Setting up and operating of the most modern and high-quality digital printing machines,
  • You can control the printing processesof single-color and multicolor printed matter such as books, calendars, posters, etc., in compliance with
    quality standards,
  • control and optimize the production processes,
  • maintain or service the printing units and
  • ensure the print quality of the final product

What does a typical working day look like?

    • Start: Your workday begins on the early shift at 6:00 a.m.
    • Switching on the machine: Your press is started up and you check all the technical conditions.
    • Calibration: The machine must be calibrated for a high-quality print image
    • Start print job: The correct paper must be loaded and all print settings must be checked
    • Press proof: You check the position, the imposition (arrangement of the individual panels on the print sheet) and the color – if necessary, you have to make further settings.
    • Everything OK: The first job can be printed
    • Control: At the light table, the level and the color screening are checked with the thread counter
    • Stopover: After a short breakfast break, more jobs are now printed
    • Unclean print image: Your machine needs maintenance and you need to find out why streaks are forming
    • Troubleshooting: You were successful and it can go on
    • Toner replacement: Your printing machine needs more cyan, so the current print job has to be stopped and you take care of the toner change
  • Lunchtime: You can relax in the common room and have lunch
  • Final spurt: The last orders are waiting for you and then it’s closing time at 2:30 p.m.

What requirements do I have to meet for the training?

For the training as a media technologist, you should bring along a portion of manual skills as well as creativity. A qualifying secondary school diploma, an intermediate school leaving certificate or a high school diploma are super prerequisites for this training. If you are then also a true team player and have the costs and quality awareness of the company in mind, you should not hesitate and apply.

Where and how does vocational school instruction take place?

Training as a media technologist is mainly dual. Here you go through three different phases, which are divided into operational, educational and inter-company divide

During the operational part, you will mainly work in production and operate various printing presses with the help of experienced colleagues. Depending on the location of your company, the school lessons take place at the vocational school in Block form or once or twice a week held. In the subject of work/technology, you will learn, for example, how to deal with faults in the printing process or how to ensure a constant paper run.

If your company cannot provide all the necessary training content, then you will have to make up the missing qualifications at an external company. The focus of this training is on practical work in the company. The theoretical knowledge is taught at the vocational school. If you are training as a media technologist in the Augsburg/Donau-Ries area, your vocational schooling will take place at BS2 in Augsburg.

What prospects do I have after this training?

Once you have successfully completed your training as a media technologist, there are numerous opportunities for further training. For example, you can complete your master’ s degree in print media or a state-certified technician in print and media technology. Alternatively, you can also opt for a degree with a focus on media production or packaging technology.
